About Moon Phases
As the Moon around the Earth and the Earth around the Sun, the angle between the Sun, Moon, and Earth changes. As a result, the amount of sunlight reflected from the moon varies from day to day. Because the moon does not illuminate its own light. Moon reflects the Sun’s light.
We see the Moon’s disk change from completely bright to completely dark: this period is called a lunar cycle, lunar month, or synodic month. The moon cycle is on average 29.53059 days.
Astronomers divide this cycle into four primary lunar phases: New moon, First quarter, Full moon, and Last quarter. There are also four : Waxing crescent, Waxing gibbous, Waning gibbous and Waning crescent.
New Moon or Dark Moon
This is the start of the Lunar cycle. At this time, the Sun and Moon, they are close together in the sky on the same side of Earth (Sun → Moon → Earth).
The Moon appears completely dark: we cannot normally see it because we are facing the shadow side of the Moon, which receives no direct sunlight.
But if we travel to the other side of the moon towards the sun, it will be fully illuminated.
Occasionally, if the position of the new moon is exactly lined up between the Sun and the Earth.
Waxing Crescent
This phase occurs between the new moon and first quarter phases. At the beginning of this moon phase, we see a thin light illumination, crescent-shaped moon light visible to the right side to the northern hemisphere.
The illuminated area gradually expands every day, covering more and more of the right side of the Moon’s surface until the entire right side of the Moon is illuminated from the first quarter phase.
After the new moon and before the first quarter is said to be Waxing Crescent.
First Quarter
First quarter moon phase gets its name because the Moon covers ¼ quarter illumination of its orbit.
However, this is a false label, because from our perspective at this time, 1/2 of the Moon’s surface is illuminated. In fact, both the first and last quarters are sometimes called half moons illumination.
First quarter in the Northern Hemisphere, the right side of the Moon is illuminated; In the southern hemisphere, it is on the left. In fact, we only see half of the illuminated side of the Moon, because the entire illuminated surface only partially faces our direction.
Waxing Gibbous
Waxing gibbous phase occurs between the first quarter moon to full moon.
At the beginning of this Waxing gibbous phase in the Northern Hemisphere, we see the right half of the Moon light up and a small portion more diffuse on the left.
As the days pass, the light creeps in, covering more and more of the moon’s surface until the full moon phase, when the entire disc is illuminated.
Gibbous means curved glowing area on the moon phase.
Full Moon
Full moon stage is named as the entire disc is illuminated. The Sun, Earth and The moon are in the same line. The moon is close to the sun so it is fully illuminated because of sunlight. So it is called Full Moon.
Last Quarter
The last quarter is sometimes called the Third quarter. The Moon is lit in the left side half and the right side appears only dark.
The Last quarter or Third is a luminated half moon.
